Solenoid Failure — Symptoms and ResolutionsUpdated a month ago

The solenoid is the valve at the heart of your aF4's feeding system. It controls the flow of food from the reservoir to your aquarium and manages the auto-clean cycle. When it fails, the unit may appear to run normally but food will not be delivered correctly. This guide explains how to identify a solenoid failure and how to get it resolved.

Symptoms of a solenoid failure

Solenoid failure typically presents as one or more of the following:

No food dispensing: The aF4 completes its feed cycle — you can hear it running — but no food reaches the aquarium. This is the most common sign of a solenoid failure.

Inconsistent or partial feeding: Food is delivered sometimes but not others, or only a fraction of the set quantity makes it to the tank. This can indicate a solenoid that is beginning to fail intermittently.

Unit runs but nothing comes out: The pump and cycle operate as expected, the display shows a normal feed, but the output tube produces nothing. This points directly to a solenoid that is stuck closed or has failed.

Leaking around the solenoid: Moisture or leaking around the baseplate area can indicate a seal failure within the valve. If you notice leaking, power off and unplug your unit immediately and contact support.

What causes solenoid failure?

Solenoid failure is typically a mechanical issue.  Solenoid failure can be induced by failure to chop sheet food small enough for the aF4 feed mechanism. Common contributing factors include:

  • Mineral or salt buildup inside the valve over time, preventing it from opening or closing fully
  • Wear on the solenoid diaphragm after extended use
  • Manufacturing shortcomings in early units (Units produced 2024)
  • Large chunks of food typically found in predator sheet food.  Clam/Squid/Mussel etc.

Can I fix it myself?

Usually no. The solenoid assembly is not a user-serviceable part. Attempting to disassemble or repair the solenoid will void your warranty. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, the correct course of action is to submit a warranty claim.

NOTE: In failures induced by oversized foods, sometimes the situation can be remedied by running a couple full auto clean cycles.

Before you contact support

Run through this quick checklist to confirm the issue is solenoid-related and not caused by something else:
The aF4 is powered on and the long black tube is fully submerged
The reservoir contains food in slurry form and is not empty
The tubing is not kinked, blocked, or disconnected
You have run an Auto-Clean cycle and the issue persists
The gray output tube is correctly positioned and unobstructed

If all of the above are confirmed and food is still not being delivered correctly, you are most likely experiencing a solenoid failure.

How to submit a warranty claim

Solenoid failure is covered under the aF4 warranty for 13 months from the date of purchase (12 months plus a 30-day grace period).

To submit a claim you will need:

  • Purchased from inD Aquatics directly — your order number
  • Purchased from an authorized retailer — proof of purchase (receipt or order confirmation)
  • All purchases — your unit's serial number (found on the sticker on the underside of the aF4)

📩 Submit a support ticket with the above information and a brief description of the symptoms you are experiencing. Our team will review your claim and advise on next steps, which will typically involve solenoid assembly exchange or unit replacement.

Outside the warranty period? Contact us anyway — depending on your situation we may still be able to help.

What to expect after submitting

Once your claim is received our team will:

  1. Review your submission and confirm warranty eligibility
  2. Provide a return shipping label if your unit needs to come back to us
  3. Ship a replacement unit or solenoid assembly once the return is received or the claim is approved

We aim to respond to all warranty claims within 1 business day.
